I do not like distractions. I dislike them more the older I get. You see; when we get older we lose our short term memory before we lose our long term memory. We can remember things from years gone by better than we can remember things that have recently taken place. It’s not enough that my short term memory lose is increasing; it also the fact that distractions sometimes cause me to forget what is really important. I want to live my life with as little distractions as possible because I want to remember what’s really important.
In our story Jesus wants Martha to think know what’s really important. Martha had invited Jesus to her home for a meal. When Jesus arrived Martha was busy making preparations for the meal. Now, for Martha preparing a meal for Jesus was the most important thing on her mind. When her sister sat with Jesus and His disciples Martha was upset and she wanted Jesus to tell Mary to help her to prepare the meal. Instead, Jesus told Martha that the things that she was most concerned about were really distractions. Mary had chosen the important things, and Jesus would not stop her. Mary wanted to be with Jesus and hear what he had to say. For Mary, this was what was really important. While Martha was focused on things, Mary was focused on Jesus and she had learned that Jesus is what’s really important.
Prayer: Lord Jesus You are what’s really important in our lives. Amen.
