Devotional:Walk in the Light:John 8:12

Larry is walking through the woods at night. He is following his daddy. There are tree limbs and rocks and holes in the path. Larry stumbles and falls occasionally. He walks slower than his daddy. So, occasionally he has to run to try to catch up with his daddy and sometimes while he is running he fails to see the obstacles that cause him to stumble and fall. Larry is not afraid. He is confident that he is safe. He will not get lost even though daddy is walking far in front of him.

Daddy continues on toward his destination. He is headed home. Daddy knows the way and he has a way of being sure that his son will know the way. Daddy has a lantern in his hand to give light to the path that he is traveling. Daddy knows that if his son follows the light he will not get lost. His son does not have a lantern, but he can see by the light that daddy has. At last they are safely home.

Jesus is being tested by the Pharisees, They do not believe that He is the Son of God; the Messiah. They attempt to trap Him by bringing a woman caught in adultery. What will Jesus do? What does the law say that He should do? Jesus passes the test. He has the right answer. He does not condemn the woman and He does not condom what she is guilty of. How does Jesus know how to answer the questions raised by the Pharisees? “Then Jesus again spoke to them saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life” (Jn. 8:12, NASB).

Jesus is the Light. He knows where He comes from and He knows where He is going. Jesus knows the truth because He is truth (Jn. 14:6). The Pharisees’ big mistake is that they think that they are the light. They think that they have the truth, but their schemes prove that they walk in darkness; meaning that they are ignorant of God’s truth and God’s way. You and I are not the light. Like Larry we walk in the light that our daddy, our heavenly Father, provides for us. Jesus is the Light. We will come to know truth as we come to know Jesus. When we follow Jesus we are walking in the Light. Amen.

Prayer: Lord Jesus we will follow You so that we can see our way in life, Amen.
