“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26, NASB).
When I enlisted in the United States Army, I was sent to Fort Jackson in South Carolina. I was from a small southern town and as far as I was concerned there were only two groups of people in our town. One was Black or white. There were different names for people of African descent. You might be called colored, Negro or names that carried a negative meaning. White folks were referred to as white and Caucasian. They were called by names that carried a negative meaning. I do not remember ever meeting anyone from Asia although I knew that the world was made up of people of many ethnic groups and from six continents and hundreds of countries. Although I had attended segregated schools, when I became a soldier in Uncle Sam’s army I lived in barracks (housing) with white people, brown people, red people, and yellow people. All of us were grouped together as one people. We were all Americans in the American army being trained to defend the constitution of the United States of America. Regardless of our station in life we became one.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Galatia, he writes to remind them that even though they were of different ethnic, religious, and national backgrounds, they are now one people. Their ethnicity has not changed. Their national origin remains the same, but they have all enlisted in the kingdom of God. They all took the same oath by giving their life to Jesus because they believed the gospel of Jesus Christ. Nothing could prevent them from being a citizen in God’s kingdom. They all had been living in trespasses and sin condemned to eternal death. Now, they are one people. They are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (v. 28). Salvation is for all people.
Prayer: Lord we thank you for Jesus who makes salvation possible all people. Amen
