We often hear people express their opinions on various matters. After they have said what they want to say the end with these words; “And that’s my truth.” Since it is their truth, they have the right to live by their truth regardless of other people’s truth. The problem is this: If everyone has their own truth we can be like Pilate who asked Jesus, “What is truth” (John 18:38). You see Pilate the governor had heard the testimonies of the Sanhedrin Council who had accumulated to themselves false witnesses to testify against Jesus. Pilate wanted to know whose truth he should believe. Should he believe the religious leaders? Which ones of the witnesses that appeared before the council should he believe? Should he believe the cries of the mob that was screaming for him to crucify Jesus? Was Jesus guilty of a crime that was worthy of death by crucifixion according to Roman law? Pilate asked the questions because he believed that the religious leaders had brought charges against Jesus because of envy (See Matt. 27:18; Mk 15:10).
Truth is not based on opinions. One’s feelings do not establish truth. All of us have our opinions, but opinions are not truth. We may know facts, but there is a difference between facts and truth. Facts are what we know now. Thus facts are temporary. On the other hand, truth is what was known in the past, remains true today, and will be true in the future. Thus, truth is eternal and immutable. Truth changes not.
Jesus said that He is the truth. Jesus is the eternal one. He is the alpha and the omega; the first and the last; the beginning and the end. He changes not and His words change not. Jesus is the truth. People are not the truth, and we have now truth. We are temporary and we will be cut off from this life and return to the dust from which we were made. However, Jesus said that we can know the truth and knowing the truth will make us free. When we know Jesus we trust and depend on His words. If we know the truth we will be free. Free from what, you may ask? Free from sin, its penalty, its power over us now, and from its presence in the kingdom of God. There is only one truth and Jesus is that truth. Get to know Jesus. Then you will have the truth. Your truth will be the truth which is Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Father, we thank you for the Truth that You have given for us. Amen.
