“For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me up” (Psalm 27:10, NASB).

David received bad news today. His brother only 53 years old was found dead. Now David has no surviving members of his immediate birth family. David has experienced the loss of mother, sister, father, and now brother. Having lost so much I can only imagine how lost and alone my nephew feels. Fortunately, Davis has a loving and supporting wife and four great children. In times like this there is a sadness and loss that cannot be overcome with human support alone. Yet, David is not alone. He will never be forsaken entirely because the Lord will never fail him or forsake him.

Psalm 27 is an often read Scripture at funerals. It is appropriate because the circumstances that prompt this psalm are uncertain. It seems that the psalmist is experiencing some kind of trouble. The psalm expresses the confidence that he knows from previous experiences that the Lord will never forsake him. Even though his closest relatives including his father and mother may forsake him with the Lord he is never forsaken. The Lord will protect him from all harm and danger. The psalmist ends telling the reader that life presents to us some despairing circumstances, but he has learned to depend on the goodness of the Lord.

“Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait on the LORD” (v. 14). You are never forsaken.

Prayer: Thank You Lord for protecting me in times of trouble. Amen
