On November 3, 2020 the American people will vote for the candidate of their choice to become the next president of the United States of America. The candidates are campaigning trying to persuade voters that they are the logical choice for the office. Essentially, each candidate is saying that those who have wisdom will vote for me. Those who vote for another candidate are not voting wisely. How can we make a wise choice when the reality is this: We do not know the truth, because there are so many things said by both candidates that are not true. How can I a Christian make the best decision based on the wisdom that I have?
If one is a Christian he/she will want to vote for a candidate that best leads to a society that lives according to the will of God. In our scripture passage Paul informs us that the wisdom that comes from men/women is not the same wisdom that comes from God. We cannot depend on what others say because human wisdom is not based on the mind of God. Wisdom that is of God can come only through the revelation of God. Thus, only those mature in the Spirit of God know the spiritual things of God. What must I do to receive the wisdom of God?
The Old Testament book Proverbs gives us the answer. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Prov. 9:10, NASB). Those that fear God above all other gods and human beings are able to receive wisdom from God. Paul explains this to us when he says, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God” (v.12, NASB). He concludes with these words: “For who has known the mind of the LORD, that he will instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ” (v. 16).
I can have the wisdom of God. I can know that I must discern the difference between the wisdom of the world and God’s wisdom. I can have God’s wisdom by making the Lord first in my life. I can grow in the Spirit through prayer, meditating on His words found in the bible, and by living according to His commandments.
Prayer: Lord I make you first in my life seeking to gain God’s wisdom. Amen.
