“Even though I walk through the valley and the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4, NASB).

Life’s experiences are like walking through valleys. Is the valley in and of itself safe or dangerous? No, it is what is in the valley that determines whether or not the valley is safe or dangerous. In Psalm 23 David talks about a valley that is pleasant and joyous. It is a valley that provides for rest and relaxation. “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me besides still waters; He restores my soul” (v. 2-3a). Although the valley is beautiful and filled with good things that are needed for a good life, it is a dangerous valley. We know that David is in a dangerous valley because his enemies are in the valley. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” (v. 5).

We all travel through life’s valleys. Life has both good and bad. One does not have to look for bad. It is already present with us. How can we find comfort in the valley when the enemies of pandemic diseases invade our communities? Do we panic when we hear of inflation, mass shootings, unrest, and hate? David found comfort in knowing that he was walking in the paths of righteousness. God was leading him. In the midst of danger David did not fear evil because God was with him. Knowing that God had His rod and staff gave David comfort. Because he walked in the paths of righteousness, only goodness and loving kindness (mercy, KJV) followed him.

What is in your valley? Are you filled with worry and anxiety? I am concerned about the valleys that our country is going through. Still, I find comfort in my valleys. Yes, there is danger in the valley, but I have learned discipline from the Lord. I trust God. His discipline and His guidance give me comfort.

Prayer: Lord we trust you, and we have comfort in our valleys. Thank You Lord. Amen.
