“The Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, that bonds and afflictions await me” (Acts 20:23, NASB).
I cannot count the times that I heard my mother talking about the dangers and hardship of those who faithfully serve the Lord. She would say that people thought that they should “get to heaven on flowery beds of ease.” My mom taught us that contrary to popular belief by many the road to heaven is a rough road. It is lined by thieves and bandits. Robbers are waiting to take from you all that you possess. They do not mind killing in order to get what they want. Those that are opposed to the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ stand ready to take you hostage and bear false witness against you. It is really not about you personally. Rather, their goal is to stop the work of the Lord. They oppose the truth of the gospel.
Paul is on his third missionary journey. He is on his way back to Jerusalem. We want to believe that the people in every city will be happy to see him, and they will welcome him with open arms. Not so, says the Holy Spirit to Paul. Instead of warm welcomes, he will be met with bonds and affliction. Yet, Paul is determined that nothing will stop him from preaching the gospel. He accepts the difficulties that he must face in every city.
I am striving to serve my purpose. Sometimes, the road is rough. The going gets tough, and the hills are hard to climb. I started out a long time ago and there is no doubt in my mine. I will face bonds and affliction. I have decided to make Jesus my choice. I know that there are some difficult days ahead. I don’t know how much longer the Lord will keep me here. I will continue on my journey. I know that there is a crown of life waiting for me after I have been in bonds and I have suffered afflictions.
Prayer: Thank You Lord for counting me worthy to suffer on Your behalf. Amen.
