What’s going on! Everything is everything. In our world today these two statements are very appropriate. Now, these have not always been very serious. They have been used simply as a way to greet someone. It’s like saying, “Good morning, how are you doing. In these uncertain days these two statements have added meaning in our life.

What’s going on! The question may now mean, “What do you know and what have you heard about the circumstances taking place in our country. Let’s see. There are fires burning in ten western states making it necessary for over 500,000 people to abandon their homes. The smoke is in the air and winds are blowing the smoke into states where there is no fire. At the same time Hurricane Sally is making its way through the Gulf Coast and up through states in the south. There are still riots with destruction of property in the same places that peaceful protests are taking place because people support Black Lives Matter because they want reform in our laws and practices in order to have social justice in our country. We can simply can that we are living in dangerous times. Joe Biden and Donald Trump are seeking to be elected as president of the United States. Both are trying to convince the American people that they are the one to be trusted and depended on for the welfare of the country. Can either of them provide the country the safety and security that the country so desperately needs? If not, is there anyone that can save us?

Psalm 46 is a song titled “God the Refuge of His People. The psalm begins with a declarative statement. “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (v. 1, NASB). The psalm describes various things that are a threat to their safety, security, and survival. It describes events that are beyond the control of the people. The people are powerless to do anything to save them. The psalmist does not look to experts, human leadership, or any other human ability and effort. What’s going on! It is something that we can do nothing about.

In spite of all that is taking place, the psalmist declares that there are no dangers that will destroy the people. God is in control. He is able to do whatever is needed to protect His people from all hurt, harm, and danger. God does not offer us a suggestion or program in hope that we will have a safe and peaceful life. No, God Himself is our refuge. He has the power to protect us by utilizing any method necessary. The Lord says, “‘Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ The LORD of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. We need no other.

Prayer: Lord, we are thankful that we know that You are refuge and our stronghold. Amen.
