He did right in the sight of the LORD and walked in all the way of his father David, nor did he turn to the right or to the left” (2 Kgs. 22:2, NASB).
Pam takes her daughter Missa shopping. Missa needs a new coat that she can wear to school for the coming winter. After arriving at the store, Missa looks at several coats on the coat rack. At last, she finds one that she likes. She goes into the dressing room and she tries on the coat. She likes it and she wonders how she will look to other people; especially her classmates and friends. She comes out of the dressing room, and she says to her mother: “Mom, do you like this? How do I look? Pam tells Missa that she looks real good in the coat. She likes it and she thinks that her friends and classmates will be impressed. Missa looks good in Pam’s eyes.
In the book of Second Kings the writer describes to us how the reign of the kings in Israel and Judah look in the eyes of the Lord. “He did right in the sight of the Lord,” or “he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” After giving this brief description of the king, the writer tells us about the walk of the king. What is his lifestyle? What are his religious practices? Does the king rule according to the Law and worship the Lord only? Does the king worship idols and follow the religious practices of the foreign gods?
Today, we must ask ourselves if our walk in the world, our lifestyle and religious practices, are right in the sight of the Lord. Our lifestyle and our worship style may be popular with people. This is not the important thing. People cannot save us from our sins. People do not determine where we will spend eternity. Jesus is coming back, and He is going to bring with Him new heavens and a new earth. He is going to separate the sheep from the goat. He is going to welcome those that do right in His sight into the new kingdom. He is going to cast out into darkness those that do evil in His sight. How can we know what is right in God’s eyes? What must I do to do right in the sight of the Lord?
First, we must believe the Gospel. Jesus Christ is the Savior sent from God in heaven to the earth to die a vicarious death on our behalf. Secondly, we must demonstrate our faith in Him by studying and learning what Jesus wants us to do. Thirdly, we must walk a new walk. We will not reach maturity in Christ immediately. We will however, have a right standing with God, and we are motivated by His words and the Holy Spirit to walk in the newness of life. We are motivated to do right in God’s eyes.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, it is my desire to do right in the sigh of the Lord. Amen.
