“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8, NASB).
When I was a teenager and a young adult, my mom watched the Soap Operas on television. One of them came on at 12:30 p.m. CST. This was the same time that Dad, my brother, and I would be at the house for lunch. As we waited for mom to prepare our meal, I begin to watch one of mom’s favorite, “As the World Turns.” This soap was centered on some central characters. A lot of things changed in these character’s lives, but the characters themselves remained the same. In any given situation you could make a pretty good guess of how each character would respond. In the meantime the city itself kept going as usual. Events changed in the city, but the city and the usual things that took place remained the same.
The world does not change even though things in the world change. For example, there are twenty-four hours in a day. The sun rises in the east, and it sets in the west. There are four seasons in a year even though weather patterns change within a season. If it is cold in July, the season is still summer. If it gets warm and flowers begin to bloom in February, the season is still winter. The seasons of our lives are accompanied with changes, but there is someone that never changes. We change, but God never changes. God is eternal, and God is love. God’s love for His world, both the physical world and the people that live in the world, remains the same.
As we navigate our new world order brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic we will witness a myriad of changes in how we do things. In every sphere of life, this pandemic will mean that new things will come into existence as some things will exist no longer. We do not need to be afraid although change naturally brings about anxiety and uncertainty. We can have courage if we have faith in Jesus Christ. As the world turns Jesus remains the same. His love that kept us yesterday is the same love that keeps us today. His love will keep us forever. The world is turning, but Jesus is the same.
Prayer: Lord God, how comforting it is to know that You never change. You are our rudder that guides our life. You are the anchor of our soul. Amen.
