“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8, NASB).
In my home I have an electronic device that enables me to take my blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar. I am able to transmit my results to my Care Coordinator and my doctor. The results are recorded and the record of my results is easily assessable to the Care Coordinator and doctor. This allows the Coordinator and the doctor to monitor my progress and/or my decline in my health status. It is a wonderful method for monitoring my health. However, this electronic mechanism is not totally dependable.
Since this past Sunday I have been able to measure my vital signs, but they have not been transmitted to the data system that stores them. On Tuesday I call my Coordinator. She informs me that the system is down nationwide. Supposedly, the system will be back up by 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning I am able to record my results but again there is a failure to transmit the results. I begin to think about how much we depend on electronic devices. As a nation we are losing our skills to do things for ourselves. What happens when the technology fails to do what it is designed to do? Is there something or someone that I can fully depend on?
The writer of the letter to the Hebrews tells the people that they cannot depend on money. They are to trust in the one who says, “I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Heb. 13:5, NASB). If we trust God we are able to “confidently say, The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid” (v. 6). I can depend on the Lord Jesus Christ at all times and in all circumstances. I believe that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (v.8). As one song writer says, “There is no failure in God.” I can always depend on Jesus.
Prayer: God our Father, we thank you for the assurance that Jesus never fails us; and He is always dependable. Amen.
