“Therefore they were seeking Him, and He eluded their grasp” (Jn. 10:39, NASB).

The song, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hand reminds us that all of creation is in the hands of God. This song is often learned and sung by children, but it applies to adults as well. The song teaches children that they are safe because they are in God’s hands. As we go through life a lot of things can happen to us; both good and bad. Children are born with birth defects. Children die with cancer. Children have accidents like drowning that kill them. Children are bullied and killed. They are abused both physically and mentally. All sorts of thing happen to children that threaten their well being and their life. How can children feel safe? The song says that nothing that happens to us can prevent us from being in the hands of God.

In John 10 Jesus is in conversation and debate with the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus declares Himself to be the Son of God and the Jews do not believe Him. Jesus says that He has sheep that are not Jews. He says, “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; they will become one flock with one shepherd” (Jn. 10:16, NASB). The Jews say that Jesus is guilty of blasphemy because He wrongly says that He is the Son of God. Jesus replies that they do not believe Him because they are not His sheep.

Jesus says that His sheep hear His voice and He gives them eternal life, and they will never perish. Jesus is making a statement that His sheep are guaranteed safety and security. “My sheep hear MY voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (10:27-29, NASB).

Jesus is not claiming that nothing bad will happen to His sheep. Jesus promise is that regardless of what transpire in the physical life of His sheep they will never lose their relationship to Him. We will all die and our physical life will be no more. The good news is that those who believe in Jesus are His sheep. His sheep have eternal life and nothing can change this truth.

I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe that I am one of His sheep. I feel safe and secure because I am in His hand. There is not one thing that can snatch me out of His hand.

Prayer: Lord Jesus I am thankful that I am one of Your sheep. I believe, and I feel that I am safe in Your hand. Amen.
