Devotional: Holy Behavior 1 Peter 1:13-16

People are troubled by the word “holy.” This is especially true when we are told that Christians are called to live holy lives. When I was growing up people that claimed holiness were considered to be somewhat of a bunch of oddballs. These people tried to keep themselves separated from people and things in the world that might cause them to sin and become unholy. These people wanted to live holy in their behavior.

The apostle Peter writes, “To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia” (1 Pet. 1:1, NASB). Apparently these believers suffer persecution because of their faith in Jesus the Son of God.

Peter tells the churches that they are looking for an inheritance from God (v. 4). They are protected by God (v. 5). They have been distressed by various trials to prove their faith (v. 6) that will “result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ’ (v. 7). Thus, they are to prepare their minds for action. “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (vv. 14-15, NASB).

I am holy because I have been sanctified by the blood of Jesus. I must do my best with the aid of the Holy Spirit to be holy in my moral conduct. I may never be rewarded in this life. In fact, living holy might result in criticism, rejection, and persecution. I am looking forward to the day that Jesus is revealed when He returns to the earth to gather His saints unto Himself.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, grant to us the mind and strength to live holy. Amen.
