“For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor. 2:16).

When I encounter various situations in my life I tend to think about things in a certain way. A lot of how I think about things that have been instilled in me from my early childhood. For example, I think about being honest; don’t tell lies. My parents instilled in me the belief that “you reap what you sow.” These two ideals combined means that I tend to own up to my mistakes and wrongdoings. I can accept that there are consequences for my actions. I believe that God forgives us of our sins, and He gives us another chance.

Paul writes to the church at Corinth. The church is divided because of differences of opinions in many areas (1:11). Paul knows that the church cannot become united until the whole body agrees to be subject to one mind. So, Paul begins by drawing a distinction between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God. The various groups think of themselves as followers of the apostles and teachers that they have learned from. It is possible that they wish to follow the one that led them to Christ. Paul wants the entire congregation to know that he and the other apostles and teachers are on one accord. They are not divided.

Paul explains that the wisdom of the world causes divisions. This is true because the wisdom of the world come from different people that think differently from each other. On the other hand, Paul and the other workers for Christ do not rely on their own wisdom. Instead, they put aside their own wisdom and adopt the wisdom that is given by God. This wisdom of God is expressed through the words of Jesus. The mind of Jesus is the mind of God. The two are not separate. If the church is to be united it must have the mind of Christ. Do not think according to the wisdom of the world. Instead, think like Jesus.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we think you for your word. Your word is wisdom. Your word unites those of us that seek your wisdom. Amen.
