Hebrews 11:13-16

This past weekend I attended the reunion for the High school that I attended. I attended a segregated school, and I graduated in 1966. The last year for the school was 1969.

At the banquet on Saturday night, Doug, one of the former students presented a plaque to the head football coach. Doug states that Mr. Robinson would always say to him: “You can do better.” Regardless to what the issue or problem was Coach Robinson would say, “You can do better.” Doug graduated high school in 1967. He served in the United States Marine Corps for twenty-five years. He was motivated by coach’s words, “You can do better.”

One of my sisters says to me, we were always taught to do the best that you can. Things might not turn out to be as we hope, but we are to do the best that we can and leave the rest up to God. This requires us to have faith in God. Faith does not just believe that God is always going to turn things in our favor. It is also believes that God will reward us with something better than we have now.

In the bible passage that we have before us we read that Abraham along with his wife Sarah looks for a city prepared for them by God. Abraham dies without finding the city. His son Isaac and his grandson Jacob follow. They too look for the city. Because they believe God they have no desire to return to the city from whence they came from. When we believe God and trust Him to keep His promises we are always looking forward.

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob die without finding the city. Do you realize that our parents and grandparents died believing God’s promises? A lot of the blessings that we receive are the result of God keeping His promises to our ancestors. We can overcome many obstacles that we face in life if we believe Coach Robinson’s words. “You can do better.”

Prayer: Lord God. We thank you for the blessings that we are receiving at this present time. We believe that you have something better for us. Amen.
