Hebrews 13:1-2

My car is leaking oil in the engine. I talk with a mechanic, and he recommends that I put this additive into the engine. He instructs me to take a drive for at least thirty minutes after application. He confidently tells me that it will seal the leak in the engine. If it does not I will need major repairs.

I get off from work at 8:00 a.m. I apply the additive and start on my thirty minute drive. I see an old man walking down the highway. I stop and pick him up. I ask him where he is going. “To Pulaski,” he tells me. Pulaski is more than an hour away. I drive for about twenty-five minutes. I think I will let the old man out at the next exit. At the next exit I continue down the highway towards Pulaski. At least two more times I think that I will let the old man out. I’ve worked all night, and I am sleepy. We don’t say much to each other.

Finally, I’m in Pulaski. The old man tells me where he wants me to let him out. When he gets out he does not thank me. He asks me if I know how to get out of town and back on the highway. His final words were: “I’ll see you later.” Who is this man? Where will I see him later?

I drive back home. I have been driving for about three hours, not the original intended thirty minutes. Why did I do this? I don’t know. Later, I remember that my dad had emphasized to me that I should treat everyone I meet with respect and kindness. I remember that he had said to me that I might be talking to an angel without knowing it.

Prayer: Father in heaven. Thank you for the opportunities to serve you through serving others. Amen.
