Psalm 119:9-16, 105

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day and I have been thinking a lot this week about the things that my mother taught me. My mom would call me on the telephone, and she would always begin with the same question: “What are you doing?” Also, she would end the conversation with the same advice. She would say: “Well, you pray. Pray that the Lord will help you to make the right step.” I’ve been thinking, what should I do to make the right step? How can I know the right path?

Let us ask a question. When I pray that the Lord help me to make the right step, how will God respond? God will respond through His word. This is what the psalmist confesses to the Lord. The psalmist writes: “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word” (119:9, NASB). How does one keep God’s word? Again the psalmist writes: “Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You” (v. 11). Memorizing scriptures have some value, but the word of God works in us when we treasure it in our hearts. Finally, the psalmist tells us the value of the Lord’s word in our heart. “Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path. When days are dark we can still make the right step because His word is in our hearts. In the darkest hour we can make the right step because his word gives light to both our path and our feet.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven. We thank you for your Son Jesus who says to us in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world.” The light of His words and His Spirit help us to see plainly where our feet are going. Amen.
