Genesis 3:20; Luke 1:26-35

Mothers are the backbones of our families. If there were no mothers there would be no life. My daddy worked hard to provide for our family, but it was our mother that gave us life. You see food enables us to exist and to sustain life. It takes more than food to give quality to a life.

Have you noticed the green leaves on the trees? Do you appreciate the beauty of the various flowers with their many colors? Both trees and flowers come from a seed planted in the ground. It takes only a minute or less to drop the seed into the soil. Any farmer or gardener can tell you that if the soil is not good the seed will not germinate and there will be no tree or flower. If the soil is not good life will not be sustained. Thus, the farmer and the gardener take great care to see to it that the soil is in good condition. Could it be that many of our society’s problems result from inadequate care of our mothers? While many of us support the rights of women, I ask, do we put enough emphasis on the rights of mothers as they seek to care for their children? After all the scriptures plainly tell us that without mothers there is no life.

The man, Adam, sinned and fell from the lofty estate that God had given to him. Adam knows that life depends upon the woman. The bible says, “Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living” (Gen. 3:20, NASB).

God sends His Son into the world so that human beings can be forgiven of sin, redeemed and made free. Now, the life of this Son that comes into the world does not depend upon the seed of a man. Instead, His birth results from the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the mother (Lk.1:35). Let us honor our mothers because without mothers there is no life.

Prayer: Father in heaven, we thank you for our life; both our physical life and our spiritual life. We honor our mothers and in so doing we honor you. Amen.
