Exodus 20: 1-7

‘“You shall have no other gods before Me”’ (Exod. 20:3).

It is easy to get caught up into the ways of the culture that we live in. We want to be accepted by others. No one wants to experience rejection. We want to be successful. Thus, often we do things just because that is the way that it is done. We may not think about whether what we do is right or wrong. We just go along to get along.

Moses has led the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt where they have been slaves for over four hundred years. Their destination is the Land of Canaan. It is a land where the people worship many gods. It is a land where the people’s lifestyles and practices violate the worship of the God of heaven. Through Moses, God gives the Israelites His Laws for worship and daily living. They are to meditate on the day and night and they are to teach them to their children (Deut. 6:4-9).

If we are Christians and if America is to be a Christian nation, we like Israel must put God first in our lives. How can this ideal become a reality in a pluralistic society? The people of God must be righteous before God in word and deed. We become a people that say “God only.”

Prayer: Father in heaven, thank you for making yourself known to us. You alone are our God. We worship you only. May we be faithful to your words? Amen.
