Luke 6:12-16
When I was a teen ager living on the farm, I often worked alone. I remember times when I was plowing the fields with a Ford 5000 tractor. There were times that the plow would cause the tractor to become stuck in the ground. I needed to get the tractor going again if I were to finish the job.
Since no one was around, I had to figure out how to get the tractor going again. I would use techniques and methods that I had learned from my daddy. Sometimes, daddy was nearby and I could go to him for help. At that time I did not know that I was learning a valuable lesson about my relationship with Jesus.
Luke tells us that it is time for Jesus to choose men from among His disciples to appoint to be apostles to carry the message and ministry of Jesus after Jesus returns to the Father. Jesus does not take a survey. He is not interested in opinion polls. Instead, Jesus goes alone into a mountain to pray. The only opinion that matters is that of His Father.
On the farm I was learning to be alone. I was learning to trust my daddy’s teachings. Now I know that there are times that I need to be alone with the Lord. This reminds me of a song that we used to sing. The words go something like this:
Where could I go? Where could I go?
Seeking a refuge for my soul,
Needing a friend, to save me in the end,
Where could I go but to the Lord?
Prayer: Father, we thank you that we can go to you in prayer and come to know what you would have us to do. Amen.
