Hebrews 11:32-40 One day my boss comes up to me and says: “Joe, I hear that you are planning on leaving us.” I ask her where she had gotten this idea. Apparently someone had overheard a coworker and me talking about transferring to another facility. I would eventually need to go the main campus of the seminary as required by the school. After explaining this to my boss I said to her: “I am always looking for a better job. I’m always looking for a better wife, better children. Why, I’m always looking for a better me.” Now, understand this does not mean that life is harsh or hard for me. In fact, life is good at this time, but I know that there is the possibility for things to be better. When growth ceases, death follows shortly. This is true about every area of our life. So, we should always look for and hope for something better. In our text the Hebrews are suffering persecution because of their belief in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The writer encourages them by giving them examples of people who have lived and died in their faith in God. He wants them to remain faithful. Do not give up. Endure the pain and the hardships. There is something better for those who die in their faith in God. It is unlikely that we will achieve all that we want to in this life. It is certain that believers do not receive all that God promises in this life. We do not need to worry. “And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect” (Heb. 11:39-40, NASB). We are looking for something better. Prayer: Father we thank you for all the blessing that you have given to us. May our hearts be encouraged when we are faced with hard times? May we remember that you have something better in store for us because we believe in Your Son Jesus the Christ? Amen.
