(Judges 21:25) “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (NASB) After Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States people were asking if Donald Trump would unite our divided nation. How will he be able to do this? After all Mr. Trump had said divisive things about various groups of people during the campaign. Would he carry out his promises to deport people and build a wall on our southern border? Would he set restrictions on immigration? Donald Trump is not the reason that we have a divided nation. Rather, his words are a reflection of how a significant number of people think and feel. We are a divided nation because every group is righteous in its own eyes. We have rejected the righteous God in the public square. We need a king who can unite us. Mr. Trump is not that king. The scriptures teach us that there is only one king that is able to bring about peace. He is the “King of Kings and the Lord of Lords” (Rev. 19:16). He came into the world to bring peace among people who find favor with God. The angels praised God saying, ‘“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased’” (Luke 2:14, NASB). There is no place in scripture where we are told that there will be universal peace in the world until the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, returns to the earth. In the meantime the church is commissioned to bring people into the kingdom of God where every person can find peace. Prayer: Lord, thank you for working on our behalf. We believe in you. We trust you. Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. We dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus Name. You are our rock and our salvation. You are our Lord and King. Amen.
