Philippines 4:8 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7, NASB). It seems easier to think about the negatives in our life than the positive things. The way we think at the beginning of the day sets the tone for what the day ahead will be like. We must guard against allowing a bad situation to ruin our day. When Paul writes this letter to the church at Philippi he is in a Roman prison. Yet, he does not allow his imprisonment to trap him into negative thinking and a spirit of defeatism. Paul writes this letter to thank the church for their support for him and the gospel that he preaches. He is so happy that he has an opportunity to preach the gospel that he does not dwell on his circumstances. Paul learns that there are two women who are in conflict (4:2). He urges them to live in harmony. They are to rejoice in the Lord and have a gentle spirit (v.4-5). He concludes by encouraging them to think positive thoughts so that they can enjoy the peace of God. We can prevent negative circumstances from ruining our day and our life. Think about things that are true, honorable, things that are right, things that are lovely, things that are of good repute, things that are excellent, and things that are worthy of praise. It is like seeing the light at the end of a dark tunnel that we are walking through. Prayer: Lord we thank you for positive thoughts. They keep us focused on the blessing that you have given us. Amen.
