(Read Matthew 5:38-48) I was watching the Democratic National Convention. First Lady Michelle Obama received a rousing ovation for her informative and inspiring speech. The news media gave her splendid reviews. I will admit that she delivered a great speech, and I am sure it probably was effective in persuading some undecided voters to vote for the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. However, I was more impressed by the “Mothers of the Movement.” Here’s why! The “Mothers of the Movement” spoke for their sons and daughters who had been killed by police officers. I was impressed because I noticed that these women spoke from their hearts about something that is dear to them. They talked about God and His goodness. They talked about having love for everyone including those who had wrongfully killed their children. They were not trying to get attention for themselves. Their goal is to bring about peace and harmony in their communities and throughout the nation. They want to prevent mothers like themselves and their families from suffering the loss of their child. They confessed that peace and the ending of violence will be accomplished if people learn to love others as God loves us all. While others may have seen this as political speeches for Hillary Clinton, I heard three of eight women speaking not only for Hillary Clinton; I heard these suffering women speak for their God. Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your love and tender mercies. Teach us to seek peace instead of revenge. May those who call upon your name be an example of your love for all people? In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!
