“When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, ‘By what power, or in what name, have you done this’” (Acts 4:12, NASB). My brother came to the garden where I was picking the beans. He said, “We have to go to the store and get some batteries. Then we can come back and finish doing the beans.” “Who said so,” I asked. “Daddy said so,” he replied. I followed him and we went to the store. This event demonstrates the name or authority that we obeyed. We did not question daddy’s authority. We simply did as he said. In Acts 3-4 Peter and John heals a man who was lame from birth. As the man sat begging, Peter and John came by on their way to the temple. Peter offered no money. Instead, in the name of Jesus he healed the man. This disturbed the people so Peter told them about Jesus and His resurrection. The priest and the temple guard took them to the Sadducees because they did not believe in the resurrection. The rulers wanted to know where they had gotten the power (ability) to heal the man, and whose name (authority) were they acting upon. Peter told them about Jesus; His death and resurrection. Peter concluded by telling them that Jesus said that they were to heal people and offer salvation in His name. He said, “And there is salvation in no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved” (v. 12, NASB). We tell people about Jesus because of who Jesus is and what he has done for us on the cross.
