Read Ephesians 2:11-22
“For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall” (Eph. 2:14, NASB)
In 2008 the citizens of the United States of America elected Barak Obama as the first African American President. Many people saw this as a sign that America was beyond her racial tensions and divisions. It has been proven that this country is divided as much now as it has ever been. The killing of unarmed African-American males has been highlighted as a symbol of racial discrimination. The murder of nine African-American men and women in a Bible study by a misguided gunman in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015 is a symbol of hate to many people.
Our country is divided over many political, religious, and social issues. These include our role in foreign wars, same sex marriage, and affordable healthcare for all citizens, minimum wages, and access to a good education. One wonders where we are headed as a nation. Can we become a United States of America?
The apostle wrote to the Christians in Ephesus because they too were divided by many issues; chief among them was circumcision. Paul wrote that they could be united as one if they would live in Christ Jesus. Instead of relying on their heritage, religion, and culture, they should come together as one under the Lordship of Jesus. Jesus died so that those who are in Him will no longer be separated by any human barriers.
Our God and our savior, we submit to your Lordship. We know that our thoughts and our ways are not your thoughts and your ways. So, we ask that you break down the barriers that separate us and united us together as we seek to do your will. Amen.
